Johannes Gutenberg was a German craftsman and inventor of the movable type printing press that "was used without important change until the 20th century".
His full name was Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden.
Although there are not a lot of historical facts about Gutenberg and there has been a lot of speculation about his life, this website includes relevant information about the man whose invention changed the world.
Born into a wealthy family, Gutenberg had privileged early years, economically difficult years during which he invented the printing press and his later years were characterised by poverty and destitution.
Like many inventors, his fame arose as a result of the impact of his invention, and not as a result of the direct impact of his life - of which we know very little.
